Bushcraft and Hunting Knives

Bushcraft Knives

My Bushcraft knives are built to withstand a very different kind of use from culinary knives. Where a kitchen knife is designed primarily for precise cutting, a bushcraft knife needs to cope with a much wider range of demanding tasks in the outdoors.  They are built for toughness.

  • Blade geometry – 4 – 4.5 mm with 900 sharp spine to use with firesteels. 58 – 60 HRC to optimise edge retention and toughness.
The convex grind supports the cutting edge giving them the strength and resilience required for hard-wearing field use
  • Created from high-grade stainless steel or hand-forged Carbon Damascus, which I forge myself in my workshop in Wiltshire.
  • Handles Full tang, stabilised wood, G10, gemstone (on commission).
  • Leather Sheaths – thick vegetable-tanned leather, individually wet-moulded to the knife for secure close-fitting retention.

58–60 HRC is somewhat softer than for many high-performance kitchen knives, but deliberately so. A bushcraft knife needs a balance between edge retention, toughness and resiience. By avoiding excessive hardness, the blade is better able to withstand the knocks, twisting and rough treatment that can occur during demanding outdoor use.

The result is a knife designed not simply to cut well, but to be trusted in the field and built to withstand real bushcraft use.

Hunting Knives

My hunting knives are optimised for edge retention and a particular cutting task.

  • Blade geometry – 60–61 HRC, Stainless steel and hand-forged Carbon steel Damascus.   Different profiles for skinning, gralloching and butchering.
  • HandlesFull tang, Micarta, wood and G10, including Suretouch G10 for improved grip in wet conditions.
  • Leather Sheaths — thick vegetable-tanned leather, individually wet-moulded for secure close-fitting retention.

60–61 HRC is a useful specification.  However, hardness alone does not guarantees edge retention. Steel type, heat treatment and geometry all contribute.

Many hunters have their own ideas about what makes an ideal knife fit for purpose. I take commissions to create and make knives to suit individual needs.
